Everyone has one of those “what the heck just happened?” moments. You know the ones: where everything looks perfect on paper—the campaign is solid, the list is well-targeted, the message is spot on, the subject line sings—and then… nothing. Crickets.
Usually, this is the kind of thing I help clients navigate. We sit down, unpack the data, troubleshoot the hiccups, and walk away a little wiser (and maybe slightly more humble). But this time? It wasn’t a client. It was me. Me. Your marketing guide. Your strategy-loving, analytics-obsessed, always-encouraging advisor who’s been at this a while.
A month ago, I asked you—my smart, thoughtful, generous community—to share your biggest marketing challenges. I was genuinely excited to hear what was on your mind. I had a clear goal. A solid plan. The audience (that’s you). The perfectly phrased email. A subject line that I just knew would land. I was ready for the insights to roll in. And then… silence. Not a whisper. Not a nibble. Not even a pity-click. Just the hollow hum of a well-executed outreach that landed with the energy of a deflated balloon.
If you’re new here, you might not know that I’ve been writing these blog posts for a while now. And I truly love the back-and-forth, the conversations, the little nudges that come from your comments and messages. So yeah, I was more than a little surprised. Let’s be real—I was briefly stunned, then just… curious.
Because this is the part where the story could’ve ended. Blamed the algorithm. Told myself “everyone’s just really busy right now.” I could’ve sent the same email again and hoped for a miracle. I could’ve hit delete and moved on. But instead, I decided to do something a little unexpected. I went old school.
Yes—I picked up the phone.
In this hyper-automated, AI-everywhere, optimize-or-die digital world, I went back to the basics. I called some of you. Real phone calls. Real conversations. We talked, we caught up, we laughed (a lot), and most importantly—I listened.
And what came out of those calls? Gold. Honest, funny, thoughtful responses. Stories. Pain points. A few brilliant suggestions (thank you for the mastermind group idea, the executive roundtable concept, and the quick coffee break chats—I’m 100% on board). But above all else, those calls reminded me of one of the most important truths in marketing:
It’s not about the tools. It’s about the people behind them. No tool, no platform, no subject line wizardry will ever replace the power of human connection. Relationships, trust, curiosity, kindness—these are the real drivers of success. Tools help us scale, yes, but they’ll never be more important than the strategy, the intent, and the people guiding them.
So here’s the moral of the story: Yes, bad outcomes and odd results happen to all of us—even the so-called experts. And when they do, you get a choice: retreat quietly… or lean in and get even more curious.
I chose the second one. And I’m glad I did. To everyone who picked up the phone, replied to a follow-up, or offered an idea—thank you. You reminded me (once again) that the best marketing isn’t perfect. It’s thoughtful. It’s human. It’s a conversation.
So here’s to the flops that teach us, the crickets that humble us, and the creativity that comes out of unexpected silence. Here’s to building smarter strategies grounded in real relationships—not just clever copy and clean dashboards.
We’re just getting started. Let’s keep the conversation going—with a roundtable, a coffee break, a quick chat, or even a surprise phone call. I’m here for all of it. If you and I didn’t connect and an executive round table or a marketing mastermind group sounds like something that peaks your curiosity, it’s not too late to let me know that you’d like to check those out… just drop me a note at khermes@thebestsolution.com
